  • The name of the popular search engine ‘Google’ came from a misspelling of the word ‘googol’, which is a very large number (the number one followed by one hundred zeros to be exact).
  • A ‘googolplex’ is the number 1 followed by a googol zeros, a number so ridiculously big that it can’t be written because there literally isn’t enough room in the entire universe to fit it in!
  • 111111111 x 111111111 = 12345678987654321
  • 12 + 3 – 4 + 5 + 67 + 8 + 9 = 100
  • 2013 is the first year since 1432 that is a rearrangement of four consecutive numbers.
  • 2013 is also the 250th anniversary of 1763, which was the year London adopted house numbers.
  • The Duke of Wellington’s London home at Aspley House had the address Number One, London, as it was the first house one came across after tollgates at the top of Knightsbridge.

  • The number 142857 is special. When you multiply it the digits found in the answer stay the same, just in a different order. Check it out:

1 x 142857 = 142857

2 x 142857 = 285714

4 x 142857 = 571428

5 x 142857 = 714285

6 x 142857 = 857142

But when you multiply it by 7, you get another rather special number:

7 x 142857 = 999999

And it doesn’t stop there:

142 + 857 = 999

14 + 28 + 57 = 99

20408 + 122449 = 142857

  • In a room of just 23 people there’s a 50% chance that two people have the same birthday. It’s called the Birthday Problem. In a room of 75 there’s a 99% chance of two people matching.
  • (6 × 9) + (6 + 9) = 69.
  • 10! seconds is exactly 6 weeks. – 10! means 10 factorial. 10! = 10 × 9 × 8 × 7 × 6 × 5 × 4 × 3 × 2 × 1 = 3628800 seconds. Which is 42 days, or 6 weeks, exactly.
  • 555 is used by some in Thailand as slang for “hahaha”, because the word for “five” is pronounced “ha”.
  • It is believed that Shakespeare was 46 around the time that the King James Version of the Bible was written. In Psalms 46, the 46th word from the first word is shake and the 46th word from the last word is spear.
  • India invented the Number System. Zero was invented by Aryabhatta. The place value system, the decimal system was developed in India in 100 BC.
